Description

Inspect, repair, maintain, service, and operate railcars and other duties as assigned.

Required Certifications: For this position, you will be required to become a Union Pacific certified driver during your probationary period. To become certified, you must meet the following Motor Vehicle and Medical Requirements:

1. Must be a minimum of 21 years of age

2. Have valid driver's license

3. Have an acceptable driving record per your Motor Vehicle Record (MVR)

4. You may also be required to obtain your Commercial Driver's License (CDL) if you will be operating a vehicle(s) with a GVWR of 26,000 lbs or greater. If this is required, you will need to obtain your Medical Requirements: Must meet the medical requirements (also called physical qualifications) for commercial motor vehicle drivers as specified by the US Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). The FMCSA physical qualifications for drivers can be found on the FMCSA homepage. Health and Medical Services at Union Pacific Railroad will make the final determination on whether or not an individual meets the FMCSA medical qualifications and may add additional medical requirements to assure the person can safety perform job tasks, with or without accommodation.

Accountabilities

  • Apply extensive knowledge of freight car construction and repair to perform job duties effectively.
  • Execute re-railing and wrecking operations with proficiency and demonstrate expertise in testing, inspecting, and repairing air brakes.
  • Utilize a wide range of tools and equipment, including hand tools, power tools, gauges, cutting torches, and welding operations, to carry out assigned tasks.
  • Possess comprehensive understanding and qualifications for conducting mechanical inspections and maintenance on various mechanical components. Adhere to billing procedures, as well as comply with the rules and regulations set by FRA, AAR, open top loading, and UPRR.
  • Ensure strict compliance with all railroad rules and regulations related to safety, operations, and the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA).
  • Foster and maintain positive working relationships with colleagues, supervisors, contractors, and customers. Demonstrate effective conflict resolution skills when dealing with challenging situations.

Qualifications - Required

  • Valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within probationary period
  • A minimum of 4 years documented experience in freight car repairman or mechanic OR current Journeyman's card

Qualifications - Preferred

  • Proficiency in basic computer skills.
  • Demonstrated experience in working with and around large equipment, including railcars, locomotives, and cranes.
  • Competency in Oxy-fuel and welding techniques.
  • Proven expertise in effectively operating a wide range of tools required for repairing railroad freight/passenger cars, such as 100-ton jacks, air tools, compressors, generators, welders, hydraulic equipment, and torches.

Physical Requirements

  • Physically Demanding Tasks: Must have the capacity to engage in physically demanding tasks, including occasional bending, stooping, and kneeling.

Work Conditions

  • Minimum age requirement: Candidates must be 21 years of age or older.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without requiring company sponsorship.
  • Comfortable working with large equipment: Candidates must be willing and physically capable of working around substantial machinery such as railcars, locomotives, and cranes.
  • Occasional travel: There may be a need for occasional travel as part of the job responsibilities.
  • Work Environment: The job entails working with shop machines, including forklifts, cranes, and tools. Employees are expected to adhere to safety protocols and maintain safe work habits.
  • Outdoor work in all weather conditions: Candidates must be willing to work outdoors regardless of weather conditions.
